Oceania cruises
Oceania Cruises is a Miami-based luxury cruise line founded in 2002 and owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. It operates eight ships carrying between 670 and 1,250 guests, built around two ideas: the most ambitious culinary programme at sea, and itineraries that favour smaller ports over marquee ones. Since 7 January 2026 it has been an adults-only line, welcoming guests aged 18 and over. Stars Desk books Oceania as an independent affiliate of a Virtuoso member agency, which adds amenities on designated voyages that are not available when booking direct.
What Oceania Cruises is - and what it is not
No name in cruising is misread more often. Roughly one in ten AI-assistant queries containing the phrase treats it as a destination rather than a company, and the confusion runs in several directions at once. This is what the name refers to.
- Oceania Cruises - the cruise line
- Founded 2002, headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida. A wholly owned brand of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Eight ships, sailing worldwide across all seven continents on voyages from seven days to more than 200.
- Not Oceania - the geographic region
- Oceania is also the name for the region comprising Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. A "cruise to Oceania" in that sense is a South Pacific itinerary, which many lines operate. Oceania Cruises sails there, but the great majority of its deployment is the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, Asia, South America and Alaska.
- Not Regent Seven Seas or Norwegian Cruise Line
- All three share the same parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are separate products at different price points. Regent is fully all-inclusive with shore excursions in the fare; Norwegian is a contemporary mass-market line.
- Not Oceania Club - a fare package
- Oceania Club is the line's loyalty programme, earned through sailed voyages. It is not a booking bundle. The fare inclusions are branded Your World Included.
- Oceania Nautica is becoming Oceania Aurelia
- Nautica leaves service for a full rebuild and returns in late 2027 renamed Aurelia. References to both names describe the same hull.
Oceania is now an adults-only line
Effective 7 January 2026, Oceania Cruises accepts only guests aged 18 and over at embarkation on all new reservations. Reservations made before that date that include travellers under 18 are being honoured in full, so children may still appear on board during the transition.
This formalised something that was already true in practice. Oceania has never run children's clubs, teen spaces or programmed youth activities, and the onboard day is built around cooking classes, wine tastings, enrichment lectures and long dinners. The policy change converts an informal character into a guarantee.
It also repositions the line against a specific set of competitors. Viking and Virgin Voyages are the other established adults-only operators, and each interprets the idea differently - Viking leans intellectual and Scandinavian, Virgin leans young and design-led. Oceania sits between them: sophisticated without being austere, relaxed without being casual.
The Oceania fleet in 2026
Eight ships across three classes. The practical decision is between the intimacy of the R-Class and the wider dining and lounge choice of the larger ships.

Capacities are Oceania's own published figures at double occupancy. Allura entered service in July 2025 and is the newest ship currently sailing; Regatta and Insignia, both built in 1998, are the oldest.
What Sonata and Aurelia change
Two additions arrive in 2027 and they pull in opposite directions, which is the point.
- Oceania Sonata - August 2027. First of the new Sonata Class, approximately 1,390 guests and 86,000 gross tons, under construction at Fincantieri. It becomes the largest ship in the fleet, but with more space per guest than any existing class. Suites will account for around 30% of accommodation.
- Oceania Aurelia - late 2027. Oceania Nautica rebuilt and renamed. Capacity drops from 670 to fewer than 500, with 238 accommodations of which 179 are suites, served by roughly 400 crew. Purpose-configured for extended voyages, with two 180-day Around the World cruises in 2028 and 2029 plus a 78-day Nordic and Baltic and a 71-day South America Grand Voyage.
- Three further Sonata Class ships are on order for 2029, 2032 and 2035.
Aurelia's inaugural season opened for reservations on 13 May 2026 and the headline world voyages are the kind of inventory that closes early in the best suite categories. If either voyage is on your list, the suite selection conversation is the whole conversation.
What is included in an Oceania fare
Oceania's inclusion model changed materially and a great deal of published information still describes the old one. The simply MORE programme ended on 30 September 2024. It was replaced by Your World Included, which applied to new reservations from 1 October 2024 for sailings departing on or after 1 January 2025.

Plus one choice
On reservations made from 17 September 2025, guests select either wine and beer by the glass during lunch and dinner service, or a shore excursion credit. It is one or the other, not both - a distinction several comparison sites still get wrong.

- Shore excursions beyond any credit selected, and pre- or post-cruise land programmes
- Spirits, cocktails and premium wines outside the beer-and-wine choice, unless a beverage package is added
- Laundry, dry cleaning and valet services, outside Oceania Club status benefits
- Spa and salon treatments
- Airfare unless booked through Oceania's air programme, plus travel insurance and medical services
The most common error in circulation: that gratuities cost extra on Oceania, often quoted at $16 to $20 per person per day. That was true before 2025. Shipboard gratuities have been inside the fare since 1 January 2025 and there is no daily service charge on your onboard account.
The culinary programme, which is the actual reason people choose Oceania
Oceania markets itself as the world's leading culinary- and destination-focused line, and the food is the single most consistent theme in guest reviews across every ship and itinerary. The structural reason is that specialty dining carries no surcharge, so the incentive to ration it does not exist.
- Master Chef Jacques Pépin founded the culinary philosophy and served as the line's first Executive Culinary Director. He now holds the role of Executive Culinary Advisor and remains involved through the Jacques Pépin Foundation.
- The Executive Culinary Directors are Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale, both Maîtres Cuisiniers de France.
- Signature venues across the fleet include the Grand Dining Room, Polo Grill, Toscana, Red Ginger, Terrace Café and the Jacques bistro, which now sails on Marina, Riviera, Allura and Vista.
- The Culinary Center on the larger ships runs hands-on cooking classes at individual workstations, bookable in advance and among the first things to sell out.
- More than 250 plant-based dishes sit across fleet menus, alongside recent Nikkei additions blending Japanese technique with Peruvian flavour.
- Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center pairs treatments with Vitality Cuisine and Wellness Discovery Tours ashore.
What an Oceania cruise costs
Lead-in fares vary enormously by class, region and season, and the R-Class ships open considerably lower than the newer hardware. These are published starting fares observed in July 2026, per person on double occupancy.

Suite categories, Grand Voyages and the Aurelia world cruises sit well above this range. Two things distort naive comparisons in Oceania's favour: every specialty restaurant is already paid for, and gratuities are already in the fare. Against a line where both are extras, a week's sailing typically carries $150 to $250 per person of specialty dining and roughly $120 to $140 per person of gratuities that never appear on an Oceania invoice.
Who sails Oceania, and how formal is it
The typical guest is a well-travelled adult who has usually cruised before, often on a contemporary or premium line, and has come to Oceania for the food and the ports rather than the ship itself. The atmosphere is consistently described as country club casual: elegant but unhurried, and never stuffy.
There are no formal nights. Daytime is country club casual. Evenings are Elegant Casual, which means slacks with a collared shirt or sweater for men, and a dress, skirt or slacks with a blouse for women. Jackets are optional and ties are not expected.
Entertainment is the honest weak point and repeat guests say so openly. Production shows are modest by mainstream standards, and the evening centres on dinner, the lounges, live musicians and enrichment talks. If a large-scale theatre programme matters to you, this is the wrong line - and that is a fair trade for what Oceania puts into the galley.

The short version: Oceania is not all-inclusive in the way Regent Seven Seas, Silversea or Seabourn are, and anyone who drinks spirits should price a beverage package before comparing headline fares. Which is better, Oceania or Viking?
They target the same adult traveller and the choice usually comes down to food versus inclusions. Oceania includes every specialty restaurant with no surcharge and is widely regarded as the stronger culinary product, with a fleet ranging from 670 to 1,250 guests. Viking includes one shore excursion in every port along with Wi-Fi and beer and wine at meals, operates a uniform fleet of roughly 930 guests, and has no casino. Oceania offers more ship variety and better dining; Viking offers more predictability and more in the base fare. Both are adults-only.
How much do Oceania cruises cost?
Published lead-in fares observed in July 2026 ranged from roughly $180 per person per night on a 10-night R-Class Caribbean sailing to around $471 per person per night on a 12-night Mediterranean voyage, on double occupancy. Suite categories, Grand Voyages and the Aurelia world cruises sit substantially higher. Because specialty dining and gratuities are already inside the fare, the comparable figure against a line that charges for both is lower than the headline suggests.
What is the dress code on Oceania Cruises?
Country club casual during the day and Elegant Casual in the evening. There are no formal nights. Elegant Casual means slacks with a collared shirt or sweater for men, and a dress, skirt or slacks with a blouse for women. Jackets are welcome but optional, and ties are not expected. Shorts, T-shirts and swimwear are not appropriate in the dining venues after 6pm.
