What Is the Marriott STARS Program?

STARS sits within Marriott's broader luxury travel-advisor ecosystem. Marriott runs a sister program called Marriott Luminous, which covers premium and lifestyle brands such as JW Marriott, Westin, and W Hotels. The two programs serve different brand tiers but use the same booking mechanism: an authorized advisor places the reservation at the standard or flexible rate, and Marriott honors the STARS or Luminous perks at check-in.

What Rates Qualify for Marriott STARS Benefits?

Marriott STARS perks apply only when booking the standard or flexible rate that appears on Marriott.com as the unrestricted rate. The following rates do not qualify:

  • Member-only rates (Marriott Bonvoy members exclusive)
  • Advance-purchase or prepaid non-refundable rates
  • Points redemptions and Cash + Points
  • Most promotional or discount rates
  • Group or convention rates
  • Government, AAA, AARP, or military rates

The Marriott STARS rate is typically identical to the standard flexible rate - guests do not pay a premium for the perks. Stars Desk can verify rate eligibility at the time of inquiry.

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points & Elite Credits

Marriott STARS bookings are considered qualifying stays for the Marriott Bonvoy program, treated identically to direct bookings:

  • Full base points and applicable elite-tier bonus points
  • Elite night credits toward Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador status
  • Promotional bonus eligibility (e.g., quarterly Bonvoy promotions)
  • Lifetime night credit

The booking is placed using the guest's Bonvoy number, so all earning happens automatically. The only exception is at Bulgari Hotels & Resorts and Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which do not participate in Marriott Bonvoy at all - at these brands, STARS still provides VIP perks, but no Bonvoy points or elite credits are earned.

Yes. STARS bookings are considered qualifying stays for the Marriott Bonvoy program - guests earn the same base points, elite bonus points, and elite night credits as a direct booking. The only exception is at Bulgari Hotels & Resorts and Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which do not participate in Bonvoy at all.

Yes. Bonvoy elite status is recognized in addition to STARS benefits. At Ritz-Carlton and EDITION, where elite members do not receive complimentary breakfast, STARS fills that gap. At St. Regis and Luxury Collection, where elites already receive breakfast, the $100 credit and additional upgrade consideration remain valuable. The standard or flexible rate listed on Marriott.com. Member-only rates, advance-purchase prepaid rates, points redemptions, Cash + Points, government/AAA/AARP/military rates, and most promotional rates do not qualify. The STARS rate is typically identical to the flexible rate - no premium.

Both programs offer breakfast and upgrades. STARS adds a $100 credit that is flexible (dining, spa, mini-bar, laundry), while Virtuoso credits are typically restricted to either spa or food & beverage but not both. STARS is mandatory at all six STARS brands - Virtuoso participation is hotel-by-hotel. Stars Desk holds both credentials and books whichever adds the most value.

STARS is intentionally limited to Marriott's six ultra-luxury brands. Marriott's premium and lifestyle brands (JW Marriott, Westin, W, etc.) sit within the separate Marriott Luminous program. Limited-service brands (Courtyard, Residence Inn, etc.) do not participate in either program.

The room upgrade is one category up from the booked room type, subject to availability at check-in. To maximize upgrade odds: book a flexible-rate STARS booking well in advance; communicate special occasions (anniversary, milestone birthday) at the time of booking; arrive at a reasonable check-in time; and consider booking a lower category to give the hotel more upgrade flexibility.
