What is Relais & Châteaux - and what is the Preferred Partner program?
Relais & Châteaux is not a hotel chain. It is an association of independently owned luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants - châteaux, manor houses, country inns and city townhouses - admitted for character and, very often, for their kitchens. No two look alike; that is the point.
The Preferred Partner program is the trade layer on top: a defined set of VIP amenities that participating properties extend to guests booked by accredited travel advisors. Not every Relais & Châteaux member participates - the current January 2026 list counts 217 participating properties across 40+ countries. Does Relais & Châteaux Preferred Partner include a property credit?
No - and listings that claim otherwise are conflating two programs. The Relais & Châteaux Preferred Partner amenity set is breakfast, welcome amenity and an arrival upgrade. There is no hotel credit in it.
Here is the nuance an advisor adds: many Relais & Châteaux properties also participate in Virtuoso. An advisor's honest take
- These are small houses - upgrades are genuinely scarce. Many Relais & Châteaux properties have 15-40 rooms. The arrival upgrade is real but never guaranteed, and in high season it often is not possible. We set expectations before you book, not after.
- The restaurant is half the trip. At the gastronomic houses, dinner books out before rooms do. We reserve your table the day we confirm the room - if you book anywhere without doing that, you have missed the point of Relais & Châteaux.
- Not every member participates. The Preferred Partner list is 217 properties, not the whole association. If your dream property is not on it, we will say so - and check whether Virtuoso or a direct relationship gets you a better deal instead.

It is not confirmed in advance - these are small properties, so in peak season an upgrade may simply not exist. Your advisor requests the best-positioned room in your booked category either way.
